Solad hosts Femi Gbajabiamila, Damilola Ogunbiyi and UEF SEForAll team in Iponri Market, Surulere Lagos - stand alone solar for productive use programme

On Friday, 10th of November 2023, Solad welcomed Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and UN SRSG for Sustainable Energy For All and the Universal Energy Facility SEForAll Team to Iponri Market.

Solad had signed as a grantee under the UEF SeForAll Stand Alone Solar For Productive Use (SSPU) Programme in February 2023. The Iponri Market Power Project is Solad’s second site deployment of solar stand-alone systems under the Programme.

Solad showcased its first deployed batch of 200 stand-alone solar systems to Iponri Market serving clean and reliable power to beneficiaries such as tailor and embroidery shops, printing presses, hair and barbing salons, pottery factories, laundry services, frozen foods, offices and more.

Solad also showcased deployed electric cooking stoves powered by installed solar panels to food vendors in Iponri Market who have transitioned from using gas stoves for their food businesses.

Our dignitaries and special guests engaged with the business owners of several newly powered shops – beneficiaries of the solar power supplied who expressed their experiences pre- and post-installation of the solar standalone systems – the majority mentioning that the installation has been a saving grace with the recent increase in petrol prices nationwide.

The primary source of power prior to Solad’s intervention was petrol generators. The installation of the stand-alone solar systems has displaced 200 petrol generators with an estimated annual CO2 savings of 896 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (‘tCO2-eq’).

With an installed capacity of 1MW, Solad intends to make Iponri Market a major energy hub and charging station for neighbouring power off takers in electric bikes, electrical vehicles and cellular towers as Iponri Market is a major commercial cluster located in Surulere in the heart of Lagos.

Solad would be looking to install more solar stand-alone systems in Iponri Market and intends to power the entirety of the market through the aid of the UEF SSPU Programme.
